Cotton Collection: The light, soft, airy staple of the fashion world
“For many centuries muslins and calicoes from the Indian subcontinent were demanded in the trading worlds of the Indian Ocean and the eastern Mediterranean. After 1500, new circuits of exchange were developed. Cotton textiles were the first goods to achieve a truly global reach.”
– Giorgio Riello and Prasannan Parthasarathi, The Spinning World: A Global History of Cotton Textiles, 1200-1850
In 5000 BC in the Indus River Valley of Pakistan, cotton was being grown, spun and woven into fabric. Around the same time, the natives of Egypt’s Nile Valley were also making cotton clothing. Later, in 800 AD, Arab merchants brought cotton cloth to Europe. It was the Arabic word “quton” that gave rise to the word ‘cotton’.
The ‘cotton gin’, a tool for separating the cloud-like cotton fluff from seeds, was invented in India in the 13th century. As the production of cotton became easier and faster, cotton fabric became popular around the world. Today it is a staple in the modern world, beloved for its soft weave and comfortable feel against the skin.
The saree, drawing meaning from the Prakrit word ‘sattika‘, was born in India. Stretching beyond its nine yards of fabric, is a diverse palette of culture and tradition that is accentuated in every fold and crease. Carrying ancient practice and artistry in its weaves, symbolism and beliefs in its colours and inspiration and creativity in its motifs, the saree culminates in bestowing upon its wearer a sensuality and femininity that is subliminally unique.
