“Although the sun has scorched the woodland dry, it was still beautiful. The browns, the yellows and the last remaining streaks of green peeped in and out of the sunshine as the dry leaves rustled in the breeze. Into this picture of tropical tranquility, an unexpected red flash flew in— a winged fire. A startlingly red woodpecker sat on the grey tree bark, under the dry canopy of leaves. The alarming beauty of the red remained against the quiet grey of trees with surprising ease; It even played with humble browns, yellows and greens in the dry leaves. Isn’t it beautiful how, in nature, conflict often becomes an alien thing?”
We paired the stunningly red tussar silk shawl, with one of the most intricately dyed sarees from the Kolam 2021 collection currently housed at Rithihi. The outcome was this unexpectedly beautiful combination.
Our friends at Kolam used over ten natural ingredients to make this saree, working with neem, mangrove, cow milk, jack, Albizia lebbeck, lime, turmeric, myrobalan, jaggery, kum-kuma, and mahogany to bring out the gorgeous colours akin to dry tropical forest landscapes. We never thought that a vibrant red tussar silk shawl will make a perfect pairing with this saree. But, it did. This gorgeous combination reflects exactly what we love about tropical landscapes, flora and fauna where surprising palettes of rich and muted colours come together in unexpected ease.
