When it’s March

If there is ever a time in the year that makes us appreciate textiles that ease the heat of the tropics, it is March— the torrid month when the northward equinox takes place, with the sun aligning with the equator directly above South Asia. So, we’re taking a moment to appreciate our favourite regional silk that makes even the most sweltering temperatures bearable— this is tussar.

Made from the fibres harvested from emperor moth cocoons, farmed or collected in the wild, tussar silks are known for their characteristic lustre, softness, and texture. What makes tussar silks so perfect for warm, humid temperatures is their extremely porous nature that keeps you well aired and ventilated even during the hottest midday. The making of tussar is often done at the hands of tribes that wander the forests collecting wild silk cocoons, and by artisans whose families have perfected the craft for centuries. We sourced this authentic tussar silk kurta and shawl from the Indian artisans that we work with. Each has been adorned with beautiful kantha embroidery that add an amazing depth of detail with traditional floral and geometric motifs.

Yes, it’s sweltering out there in the sun. But, stepping out into the March heat seems a degree less daunting with a layer of beautiful tussar on our skin.
