Encounters; Kandyan x Kuchipudi

Event location:
Rithihi store—19, Alfred House Gardens, Colombo 3

Event description:
Part of what makes an encounter beautiful, is its fleetingness; knowing that it will come to an end, no matter when in time. This is true for dance too. The ephemerality of dance lends to its mystique. As Nietzsche said, “The end of a melody is not its goal: but nonetheless, had the melody not reached its end, it would not have reached its goal either. A parable.”

The dancer knows that the dance will end; that the audience will go home and the stage will sleep empty tonight. Yet, the dancer will dance. No—therefore, the dancer will dance; knowing that beauty is a thing of ephemera, that nature is a thing of ephemera. Even love, in its wildest form, is an ephemera—an encounter with an end.

When two amazing dancers—Shantala Shivalingappa and Thajitha Dias encountered for a brief correspondence in dance, it was with the Rithihi space in Colombo as their stage. Through them, two dance traditions—Kuchipudi and Kandyan also encountered one another building a fascinating dynamic. With filmmaker Ruvin de Silva witnessing this rhythmic encounter through the lens, a fleeting echo of it remains with us. But, the dance? It is over, and that makes it even more beautiful.
